Auctioneer's FAQ
If Auctioneer's not working, here are some possible remedies:
The following Questions and answers where taken over from the forum
Auctioneer FAQ on the forum.
Note: This Faq only gives answer to questions on the latest release. make sure you're running the latest release version. See the Downloading / Installation section on downloading to find a link to the current release versions..
Note2: The questions here are not copied in the same order. Some reshuffling has been done to fit them in the sub-categories. For now the same question-numbers as on the forum are being used. The faq on the forum is leading (since it is updated the most)
Q: Why aren't the questions in the same order?
A: The forum-faq is maintained by Dinesh, who also has the lead in maintaining the faq. The wiki-faq is maintained by Nemelis, who decided to group the questions on the forum-faq into the sections you see below.
Note3: Only the latest questions (which were not already listed here) are taken over in the latest update from the forum. The older ones which might not be appropriate anymore are not taken over (with exception from 1 which was already listed here)
- Q0: I have a n00b question
A: No you don't, a noob question is a question not asked.
Downloading / Installation
- Q1: Where do I download Auctioneer?
A: You can download the current release of Auctioneer on the main download page. I suggest the Auctioneer Complete download.
- Q2a: Enchantrix isn't working any more!?!
- Q2b: What happened to Enchantrix?
(Also listed in Enchantrix's FAQ)
A: Good news! Enchantrix 4.0.2 is now in beta test stage, available on the developer downloads section (bottom of the downloads page). It works as far as we know, but needs more testing, and more localized strings. 4.0.2 is compatible with Burning Crusade and the WoW 2.1 patch.
- Q3: Help! It says my Auctioneer stuff is incompatible!
A1: You're probably looking at Itemizer, which was distributed with some of the earlier beta releases, but which has since been removed because it will not be ready for 4.0. You can delete that folder or ignore the "incompatible" message for it for the time being.
A2: If all your auctioneer add-ons report being incompatible, and you downloaded and installed a recent version, then you probably just didn't install correctly. This wiki should help.
A3: If patch day just happened, read Q1 for your answer.
- Q9: Help! Blizzard just released a patch, and now Auctioneer isn't loading! What do I do?
A: Every single time blizzard downloads a new patch (i.e. every time you have to agree to the EULA again), you will have to log in, go to your character selection screen, hit the AddOns button on the bottom left, then enable the "Load Out of Date Addons" checkbox in the upper right. You have to re-enable this checkbox EVERY SINGLE TIME there is a new patch, no matter how minor it is.
Otherwise you have to wait for your favorite mods (including Auctioneer) to release a new version which is "certified" for that new version release - but fair warning, that release is never coming for those minor patches which don't break Auctioneer in any way.
- Q14: I'm installing a new version of Auctioneer. What do I need to do to save all my old data?
A: In general, nothing. Updating Auctioneer shouldn't affect any of your data.
Having said that, you should be backing up your add-on data periodically, in case your data file gets corrupted and you have to revert to an earlier version. To back up data from all your add-ons, make a copy of your "World of Warcraft\WTF\Account\<AccountName>" directory. To back up just your auctioneer data, make a copy of the "Auctioneer.lua" file in the "World of Warcraft\WTF\Account\<AccountName>\SavedVariables" directory. Note: there is another file called Auctioneer.lua in your Addons directory - this is not the file you need to back up.

UI Questions
- Q4a: Auctioneer now requires me to confirm each bid I make. Can't you make it go back to the way it used to work, when it just bid automatically?
- Q4b: Didn't that BottomScanning thing used to automatically buy auctions? Can I change a setting to make it do that again?
A: No, this was one of the changes in WoW 2.0. Placing a bid now requires a "hardware event" (aka button click). Because of the way auctioneer is built, this means we need to have a confirmation dialog, sorry.
- Q5: Clicking the scan button / typing "/auc scan" isn't doing anything!
A: Make sure you have at least one category checked before reporting this as an error, please.
- Q: Q: What the heck are those three new icons on the top of the browse tab?
A: Read me
- Q7: What is this swatter thing? It is causing me lots of errors!
A: Swatter is an improved error catching addon. Rather than popping up the big red box on your screen when addons break or do bad things, swatter pops up a nice dialog box that includes not just the error, but also lots of helpful debugging information (called the stack trace). If you're seeing the swatter dialog, it usually means SOME OTHER addon is causing an error, not that swatter is. Try to read the beginning of the swatter data for a familiar name to get some idea of what addon is causing the problem. If it looks like an auctioneer file, you can try clicking into the dialog, which should highlight the whole text of the error message, then copying (with ctrl-c) the data and posting it here in the forums, and we'll try to take a look at it. It's even better if you can duplicate the problem with just auctioneer addons loaded, by the way. Depending on the error, that may be one of the first things we ask you to do before spending any time trying to figure out what happened. Note that swatter should no longer pop up a dialog if the error is one which the base client already reports, but silently ignores.
- Q10: Recently my game has started forcing me to log out, telling me that my scripts are using too much memory. Is this auctioneer related?
A: Most likely yes. Auctioneer uses a lot of script memory. Luckily, it's an easy problem to fix - just go to the AddOn's screen, and increase the amount of memory listed in the upper right. You can just select a higher number, or use "0" to indicate "no maximum". Many users do this with no ill effects. Seriously - just make it a 0. You'll thank me later. Note: Blizzard says they will be removing the need to adjust script memory settings in WoW 2.1.
- Q10a: I start a scan, and sometime later, during the scan, WoW just closes and there is no message after the fact. Is this auctioneer related?
A: This is most likely a script memory problem, please read Q10 above. If you exceed the amount you have set as a limitation, which is especially likely during a scan (which is a memory intensive process), WoW will briefly display a message telling you that it is closing for this reason, and will then just unceremoniously close down. So if you miss that quick dialog, you'll have no idea why WoW "crashed" during the scan.
If WoW is actually completing the scan, but then "crashes" afterwards, you probably have just set the "/auc finish" option to either the "exit" or "logout" setting. See the Slash commands list for more info.
- Q12: I just started seeing this message in my chat logs, what does it mean? Your Auctioneer SavedVariables file is XX.XXX% Full
A: That message is new with the 3.9 release, and tells you how close your auctioneer saved data is to the maximum number of "keys" allowed by LUA, the script language used by WoW. When that number gets to 100%, you will be unable to load your Auctioneer data any more (getting a "constant data overflow" error on logging in). For the moment, the only thing you can do to help keep this number low is try to scan a smaller number of realm-factions on any one account - our experience has been that you shouldn't reach the limit if you only scan a single server-faction, though a small number of users have mentioned that they are getting close.
Note: Versions prior to 1411 may have been artificially increasing the size of your SV file. Please upgrade to the latest version, especially if you are seeing this problem.
If you have previously scanned data for realms/factions you no longer care about, you can purge that data by doing the following:
- First back up your saved variables data;
- Then log onto a character on a server-faction you wish to delete (creating one first if necessary);
- Do an "/auc clear all";
- Log out and repeat for any other server-factions you no longer need.
You can also try manually editing some data out of your data file, but this is a very delicate operation and is only recommended if you've already reached 100% and can no longer even load Auctioneer. BE SURE YOU BACK UP YOUR DATA FILE FIRST!
If all else fails, you'll have to start over, I'm afraid.
- Q12a: I've started getting a "constant table overflow" error every time I log in with Auctioneer, and all my data is missing!
A: Bad news, you just got your Saved Variables file up to 100% full, as described above in Q12. If possible, restore a backup and try trimming off some of your extraneous server-faction data you don't need. If not, follow the advice at the bottom for manually editing the file. Good luck.
- Q13: Why don't you guys figure out a way to ignore really high scam values? Here's one way to do it...
A: We already do, using a fairly sophisticated method called IQR medians. Unfortunately, if a scammer is willing to flood the market with a ton of bogus auctions, there is no statistical way to know that they are outliers and to discard them (they may even be the majority of auctions). This situation is especially prevalent for disenchant reagents, as they have no deposit costs, so scammers can try this for free. We are looking at longer-term solutions to fixing this problem as well, but they won't be available until auctioneer release 4.2 at the earliest.
- Q6: This version of Auctioneer is causing my Pet Bar to disappear!
A: No, it isn't (almost certainly). WoW 2.0 makes it extremely easy for mods to do stuff that quietly breaks different parts of your interface. One of your other mods is doing it. Really. See this Bug Forum blue post, and the pages of people reporting the same problems, many without Auctioneer. Patch 2.0.5 supposedly provided "Improved robustness of pet action bar display, now less likely to be accidentally blocked by addons." Who knows what that means, really - your best bet is still to figure out which of your addons is causing it (probably not Auctioneer!), and have them fix it by not hooking secure functions which end up tainting the pet bar.
- Q8: I get error messages telling me that <Swatter/Stubby/Auctioneer> is causing my other AddOn <insert other addon here> to use an action not available to it, even when I'm doing something mundane like <looting/running/something else mundane>!
A: As with the Pet Bar bug above, this really is most likely a problem with some other addon. They cause an error, but your client would usually just silently not do what it was supposed to do without throwing an error. Sometimes the error will continue to cascade to more and more addons (via something called taint), until eventually it causes an error to actually get thrown by another addon, like Auctioneer. There's nothing we can do to fix this - we have to wait for the other addon to fix things on their end. Still, if you want us to have a look, copy and paste the error into a forum post. Bonus points if you do a forum search first to make sure no one else has already reported this. Double bonus if you can duplicate it with only auctioneer addons enabled.
- Q11: ZOMG, I just went into Booty Bay/Everlook/Ratchet, and now all my auctioneer data is gone!
A: Relax, no it isn't. One feature of auctioneer is that it keeps all realm-faction data separate - this means the neutral auction house data is stored separately from your home faction data. And when you move into a neutral auction house zone, auctioneer automatically switches over to that set of data. There is no way to stop this behavior, but you can make it so that it always shows your home faction data, even when in the neutral cities. Just type in "/auc also home".
- Q11a: All my auctioneer data just disappeared, and now every item says "Never seen at auction before"!
A: Please re-read Q11 above and make sure it doesn't apply to you before posting a support request.
Other known issues not taken over from the forum
- Need to download an Alpha/Beta/Other version:
- A: step 1: go to the Auctioneer download page
- step 2: scroll down for the "Other downloads and developer versions"(don't select any of the release-versions)
- step 3: click on any of the addon-titles you want (e.g. AuctioneerComplete (Auctioneer, BeanCounter, Enchantrix, EnhTooltip, Informant, Itemizer and Stubby) (I advise you to use this particular zip-file))
- step 4: Select the version you want to download.
- An error message like Type /help for a listing of a few commands appears when " /auctioneer" is typed:
A: Check out the No /auctioneer section.
- No visible vendor prices in the tooltip since upgrading Auctioneer:
A: [[Auctioneer/No Vendor Price|No vendor prices]].
- Convert/Disable pop-up box:
- A: Step 1: make sure you get the latest official Auctioneer release and read up on them (there are releases that indeed need a convert of your data)
- Step 2: If you have the latest release and you still get the error-message: delete the WTF\SavedVariables\Auctioneer.lua. Drawback: This means that your scans are lost. (Backup frequently, see also How to backup your saved data)
- CTRL-ALT-Right click not working and Cosmos AllInOneInventory installed:
A: The Cosmos version of AllInOneInventory somehow disables the CTRL-ALT-Right click (start scanning for item which is clicked when in AH) functionality. To fix this delete the Cosmos version of AllInOneInventory and download the latest version of AllInOneInventory. (Added bonus: it also groups the bank slots together instead of putting them over the grouped bag slots).
- What does the SavedVariables folder contain?:
A: See SavedVariables
- Scan button is not visible when both Auctioneer and WoWEcon are installed:
A: WoWEcon replaces the Scan button with a menu which provides the Auctioneer Scan functionality as the first item. Any problems with this should be directed to WoWEcon.
- Auctioneer does not scan after installing the latest version:
A: Check if any of the categories are checked. If not check at least 1 of them and Auctioneer will scan. If you have confirmed that you have at least 1 category checkmarked and Auctioneer is still not scanning, post your exact settings on the forum.
- I want to help testing the latest Auctioneer builds:
A: If you would like to test Auctioneer, please help us by scrolling to the bottom of the downloadpages of the seperate builds (e.g AuctioneerComplete) and download a developer beta/gamma version of Auctioneer. Report your findings via the forum (Developers will ask you to file a trac-issue if necessary).
